In the Tony Hawk: Ride and Shred spin-offs, players use the skateboard peripheral to simulate the riding of an actual skateboard in the game. The peripheral, shaped similarly to a real skateboard, is equipped with infrared sensors to detect motion. Turning, leaning, hopping, and other actions are intended to reflect in the games realistically.
