Glitches are various unusual effects that normally shouldn't appear in the game. Glitches may include incorrectly displayed graphics, collision detection errors, game-freezing or crashes, sound issues, and others. Some glitches are potentially dangerous to the game save data. Glitches are usually caused by programming errors which results in behavior not intended by the programmers.

Glitching[]

Glitching is the practice of finding and exploiting flaws or glitches in video games to achieve something that was not intended by the game designers. Gamers who engage in this practice are known as glitchers.

Possible causes[]

Most Tony Hawk games glitches are caused by:

  • Flawed modelling and collision meshes - leads to bounces, walls that skater can't Wallride, rails in the air, sometimes may gain access to the areas that are meant to be inaccessible, etc.
  • Programming errors - this may lead to "undocumented" moves like Wallshuffle (these are also called techniques) as positive and wrong skater behavior like Backwards Manual as negative.

Glitches in Tony Hawk series[]

The most infamous glitch in the series was found in Tony Hawk's Underground 2. In the online mode, a player that plugged in a USB keyboard to their PlayStation 2 could bypass the character limit. If the player sent a message with a long string of brackets bypassing the character limit, the receiver of the message would have their console freeze upon receiving the message (the victim only needs to receive it, not open it). This damaged the population of the game, as players got burnt out by excessive game freezes caused by malicious players abusing the glitch, and as a result stopped playing.
