Tony Hawk's Games Wiki

Not to be confused with the video game of the same name.

Downhill Jam (Called Phoenix in Tony Hawk's Project 8) is a Level that first appeared in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. It is the sixth Level of Career Mode in that game, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X In TH1 Career and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 in THPS Skate Tour.

It appears as a bonus Level exclusively in the Windows version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 unlocked by getting a Gold Medal in Marseille, while it appears as the seventh Classic Mode Level in Tony Hawk's Underground 2 and the sixth Level of that aforementioned mode exclusively in the PlayStation Portable version of Tony Hawk's Project 8.

The level also appears in the Nintendo DS version of Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, except it is extended and renamed as The Hoover Dam.

Layout[]

The level is set on a damming project in between Nevada and Arizona set up by an electric company called Neversoft Elec Co. Valves are scattered along the level to control the water flow; so, when broken, water streams out of control. Like the Mall level, it is a single-lane stage, with beginning and end points.

From Tony Hawk's Underground 2, more Gaps have been added to the Level.

From Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X, reaching the finish line takes the player back to the start, than the session instantly ending.

Differences Between Games[]

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2[]

It is almost identical to it's appearance in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, with the biggest change being further draw distance. The Birdhouse sponsors on the top right part was adjusted, and the Mountain Dew sponsor was replaced with LTI Greymatter. The valves can be grinded on, though they only contribute a score boost.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X[]

The Level is more visually detailed, including rockier canyon textures and clouds in the skybox texture. The time of day and overall lighting was also set to a dark late evening, compared to a bright late afternoon sunset in the Level's original appearance. Taco Bell sponsors were added, replacing some of the existing ones and the graffiti now has designs that blend in with the Level than just standing out.

Additionally, grinding the valves now creates a proper water-bursting effect as opposed to it already being present.

Tony Hawk's Underground 2[]

The Level received slight adjustments in its layout, such as the wall just before the second valve on the left being taller in height and an extra set of valve pipes before the third valve's location. People can also be seen roaming around the Level, commonly near the end.

Visually, the redesign is based off it's appearance in Pro Skater 2X, except it is slightly later and the time of day was also set to midday. Lots more sponsors were added and repositioned in various places, some entirely replacing graffiti. The start/finish signs were also replaced with sponsors.

Tony Hawk's Project 8[]

The Level bases its appearance in Underground 2, with some minor changes. The lighting and time of day was set to late afternoon, slightly matching its original appearance in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and the textures are in lower resolution, like the unrealistic cyan water effects for example. There are also no longer people roaming around.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD[]

Though the layout is nearly the same, the Level now has more visual detail added to the dams than the terrain, such as the rocky mountains being taller. More water spouts were added to the valves and puddles now form at the bottom.

The time of day was changed to night, with lights added to the dams and ramps. Much of the advertising billboards were completely removed, notably in the jump leading to the fourth valve being replaced with a danger sign. A decorative bridge from above was also added above the stage after that jump was also added.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2[]

The Level now almost exactly matches the layout in earlier appearances, except with vastly more detail, design influences from Pro Skater HD being loose and the time being set to midday. The number of spouts from the valves were reduced like in the Level's early appearances.

The half-pipe under the third valve now visually looks like a bridge, with the left side being represented as a wire fence, though it still can be used to perform Tricks. More rocky mountains were added near the ending point of the Level, and drones can be occasionally be seen flying around.

Origin[]

The Level is based on the Hoover Dam, located near Las Vegas on the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada. In Tony Hawk's Underground 2, based on the level select map, it is located in Ceará, Brazil.

Trivia[]

  • In THP8, the level is called Phoenix, as in, Phoenix, Arizona.
  • Downhill Jam was one of three levels planned to be included in Tony Hawk's Underground, but weren't included in the final game (along with School and Philadelphia); however, level data can be found in the game's files.
  • There was a recently discovered "Secret Room" near the start of the level. It involves going through a window opposite a high ledge situated above two pipes. This is all viewable from your starting location but getting inside is very tricky as it was semi-removed in Beta stages of development.
